Newcastle United have joined the list of clubs interested in signing one of Liverpool’s key summer targets.
Eddie Howe’s side have enjoyed a remarkable campaign so far and are looking to improve on their squad ahead of a return to Europe next season.
The Magpies have already booked their place in next season’s UEFA Conference League after beating Liverpool to the Carabao Cup title.
The title was their first major trophy since 1955, and they could add even more success to what has been a hugely successful campaign by finishing in the top five and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
They are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of what is expected to be a big season and have identified one Liverpool target as a player they would like to sign.
The player in question is Dean Huijsen.
Liverpool are one of the clubs keen on the 19-year-old who has become one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents after a breakthrough season that earned him a senior Spain debut in March.
According to a recent report by the Independent, Chelsea leads the race with a seven-year contract offer, aiming to finalise the deal before July’s Club World Cup.
However, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook suggested that the Blues do not have a significant advantage as reported.
Huijsen has a £50 million release clause, attracting interest from several clubs, including Real Madrid and now Newcastle.
This is according to the BBC, who reveal that the Magpies have now joined the race for the defender.
The report also revealed that Liverpool’s interest in the ex-Juventus defender may depend on developments regarding Ibrahima Konate’s future.
“Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah’s futures at Anfield could also impact Liverpool’s level of interest in Huijsen.”
Per the report, “Newcastle will prioritise a new central defender this summer, having missed out on number one target, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, last year and could attract Huijsen, particularly if they qualify for the Champions League.
